I teach and do research in Medieval Scandinavian literature, with occasional excursions into folklore and other fun fields. I have taught at UC Berkeley, UCLA, and Gustavus Adolphus College, along with working as a freelance translator and editor. My translation of Heavenly Bodies by Ola Sigurdson recently came out from Eerdmans. When I have some free time, I write poetry and fiction (mostly fantasy–what can I say, I grew up wanting to be Tolkien). Occasionally I actually submit something to a journal, and more occasionally I have something accepted (though from 2010-2012 I had a pretty nice percentage of submissions published–we’ll see how it goes now that I’ve gotten a bit more ambitious with my targets). If you’d like to support a poor academic/writer/artist, check out my “Support this site” page. My sites are this blog, my sketch blog, my deviantart account, and my redbubble store. You can contact me regarding any of these at vikingsbooksetc via gmail. If you find that that isn’t working, please comment below–I am worried I didn’t get the email set up right… [EDIT: Turns out I thought I’d connected this email to my regular email but hadn’t–I’ve been missing messages since 2015. I’m really sorry for those I did not respond to.] Also note, most of the links for the following poems no longer work–I’ve put up reprints of most of these on my poems page.
Publications (non-academic):
“The Giant and the Cathedral” (retelling of a legend) and “On Going to See the Blue Whale” (poem) in Fables E-zine (now defunct)
“A Stone Age Man Confronts His Son” (nominated for Best of the Net) in The Rose and Thorn Journal (now defunct and no longer archived).
“The Cabin and the Stars” in Ideomancer
“Amateur Astronomy” in Everyday Poets
“Sketches of Leaves” in Everyday Poets
“The Waves on Lake Vättern” in Everyday Poets
“A Rainy Day in May” in Everyday Poets
Hopefully more publications to come, though I’ve been busy keeping up with the academic side of things lately. I did some guest blogging for Rose and Thorn back in the day as well, but it is unfortunately no longer online. I’ll see if I can get my hands on that one of these days.
Hey, got an update on your book reviews and thought I’d come leave a quick message. Hope you’re doing well. Planning on moving down to southern california in the next few months after I finish at UC Davis. Hope you’re well.

Cool site! I see you do book reviews. Would you ever be interested in reviewing a textbook that teaches Norse mythology to high-school students? Let me know if you do.
Possibly. I’m pretty busy these days (the life of an untenured academic going from job to job), but I’d be willing to take a look at something.
Hi CG! Where could an author submit a book of Norse mythology to you for review?
I just set up a new email acct just for this blog, so you can try contacting me through that. It’s a gmail account, address the same as this blog: vikingsbooksetc.

Thanks Carl for following my blog Thoughts & Sensibilities. I invite you to my other blog: Mystic Strings – http://bit.ly/1Jc5tGN – hope all is well 🙂
In regard to your own writing, there is a new Norway-based publisher called Nordland Publishing. They are on the lookout for writing about all things North, fiction, poetry, etc.
I recently had a poetry collection published by them, and also a story in The Northlore Series Volume One:Folklore. Fiction and poetry based on Scandinavian folklore, the next in the series is Myth, to be followed by Legend.
Check out their website, it may be you have something suitable to contribute. Maybe even a novel?! 🙂
Thanks for the note! I’ll check them out.
