A quick post for the new year. I’ve been a bit down about various partings, past, present, and imminent, so I had a bit of a “oh, yes, that’s it…” moment when I ran across a version of the “I see the moon” folk-song in a poetry collection of Sarah Kay, as a lead-in to her poem “Astronaut.” I really like Kay’s version, though I don’t know whether it is her own unique version of the song or a version she learned elsewhere. Apparently it was also a pop-song back in the 50s, and it looks like there are a few different traditional versions listed in various places on the web, including several youtube links for various versions here at Mamma Lisa’s. The sentiment recalls (or predates?) that of the “Somewhere out there” song in An American Tale–a movie I don’t really remember, though the idea of standing under the same sky, the same moon, as someone dear but far away has stuck with me since some early viewing.

Below is a video of Sarah Kay performing “Astronaut”, complete with a rendition of “I see the moon” at the start.

Inktober Troll 001Yikes, I haven’t done any posts yet this month–and tomorrow is a new month! Well, Halloween is a good excuse, I suppose–and this will be as much as I do for Halloween today, as I’ll be working late into the night.

Last year I posted about the politics of costuming and put up a picture of a post-colonial sci-fi teddy dressed as a Viking (cultural appropriation!), and the year previous I had a couple Halloween-related posts, one with some reading recommendations, and one with some notes for those wishing to put together an (admittedly very basic) Viking costume. This year will be about those most Scandinavian of Monsters, trolls. Well, OK, I already have a post on trolls, or more particularly, on John Lindow’s recent book on the subject, which, as I mentioned before, I highly recommend. So I’m not really going to write much today (no time in any case). Instead, here is a sketch of a troll (OK, very different visualization than what you usually get with Scandinavian representations of trolls)–my final sketch for Inktober 2014, which I’ve been occasionally contributing to on my tumblr and deviantart.

Additionally, here is a movie recommendation: Troll Hunter! I’ve mentioned it before, but I still love this Norwegian movie. OK, if you want something scarier but still Scandinavian, try the Swedish¬†Let the Right One In (there is an original Swedish version, which I’ve watched, and a remake), based on Jonas Ajvide Lindqvist‘s¬†novel (I recommend more of his work in one of my posts linked to above). If I have time for a break from work tonight, I will watch one of those two movies (last I checked, both are on Netflix). Trailer for Troll Hunter embedded below (if I manage to do it right), though honestly, part of the joy of the film is the tension as you wait to finally glimpse a troll–so I say just go ahead and watch the full movie! Also, apparently a remake is in the works–I don’t know why, as the original is pretty much perfect as is. :/

Happy Halloween.

Grim Bunny 5

Fifth picture! My favorite so far. I am going to need to start making new sketches soon. The rules remain the same: Tell me who TGB is, what the story is for this picture, even how the pics relate to each other, if you want. But if you don’t care who TGB is, whether TGB is he/she/?, hero/villain, pursued/pursuer, etc, but just enjoy the pics, then be sure to like/share/evangelize! The tumblr version is here, and I also appreciate getting hits on deviantart.

Also, I realize bunnies have dominated this blog lately. Sorry, haven’t had time for anything besides these super quick posts. Right now I’m mostly wearing out my neck/shoulders/back/hands/eyes/brain translating this book on the theology of the body. Fascinating stuff, and I hope to put together a blog post related to it at some point, but for now it’s not leaving much time or energy for other stuff. Will try to carve out a moment for something more in the near future though.

Grim Bunny 4

The Grim Bunny on the run! You know the game–what is TGB up to? Who IS TGB? Villain, hero, antihero, victim? Male, female, otherwise? Is it morning or evening, or are there just really strong spotlights off beyond the upper right corner? Participate if you’d like, otherwise sit back and enjoy the show! It was fun drawing things from this perspective–not sure I’ve ever done that before. I hope it turned out alright!

Remember, you can also follow the adventures of TGB on my tumblr and deviantart!

I know, it’s been a while since I’ve had a viking or book related post–will hopefully remedy that soon, but lately I’ve been swamped with this translation project that I’m doing (I need to finish the first two chapters–90 pages–before I get my first pay check). That said… it’s pretty fun work! When I’m not stuck on a super obscure philosophical term.
